Hotel Altis completes first phase of five million euro renovations
Great Hotels of the World (http://www.ghotw.com)Luxury Collection member, Hotel Altis(http://www.ghotw.com/hotel-altis) in Lisbon, Portugal has announced the completion of the first phase of a multi-million euro renovation.
200 guestrooms have been completely refurbished and the entrance lobby will be restored for completion by at the end of August 2011.
The renovation, managed by architects Cristina Santos e Silva and Ana Menezes Cardoso restores the spirit of innovation and vision of the original designer Daciano da Costa whilst creating a more modern, sophisticated and current ambiance.
The original structure was kept in the rooms, with new coatings and original woodwork replaced. New ebony and stainless steel furniture has been placed in the rooms and the décor in the hallways has been replaced as well as new carpets.
The reception lobby is being renovated by the same architects as well as Joao Paciencia. The remodelling positions the service desk in the front wall of the lobby and is framed by black lacquer. A new bar and rest area will fill the area of the old reception desk.
Ruben Paula, Director of Hotel Altis comments, “These renovations arise from the need of an upgrade to the equipment of the hotel, making it more appealing and comfortable to exceed the demands of our clients. Since 1973 Hotel Altis has been an icon of the city and the stage for important events. Now the hotel is preparing itself to continue to be a symbol of modern Lisbon.”
Ideally situated in the centre of Lisbon, a short walk from Avenida da Liberdade and from the historical quarters, the five star Hotel Altis frequently hosts high-profile events and has become a part of the city’s recent history.

Stoke Place celebrates completion of major reburbishment
Stoke Place in Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire, opens 10 new bedrooms, gym, treatment room and two new meeting spaces
Great Hotels of the World (http://www.ghotw.com) is delighted to announce the completion of a major refurbishment at Stoke Place – an English country house in Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire, UK. Stoke Place (http://www.ghotw.com/stoke-place) has opened 10 new Garden Bedrooms, located within their walled garden and peacefully secluded from the rest of the property. Each of the new 10 bedrooms has one wall of glass with lovely views of the surrounding grounds and private seating areas. The rooms are very modern with wooden flooring and beautifully tiled bathrooms. These new rooms are also perfect for groups in need of a private area. The bedrooms overlook the new herb & vegetable gardens at the hotel, designed to make the property more self-sufficient and environmentally-friendly. The successful completion of these bedrooms takes Stoke Place from a 30 bedroom to a 40 bedroom hotel.
The Dhillon Group’s Head Office move to Mayfair in London has also allowed the hotel to increase valuable working space for Stoke Place’s corporate clients. Located in the property’s Old Stables, two new office spaces have been created, including a boardroom for up to 10 delegates and another meeting space for up to five delegates. These new settings are perfect for more intimate meetings and provide alternative breakout options from the larger meeting spaces at the hotel.
Stoke Place has also responded to guests’ requests for a gym onsite. Located in the Old Stables of the hotel with courtyard views, the brand-new gym boasts a quirky and fun design, complete with wood panelled walls, vintage furniture, individual mirrors facing each machine, and the latest gym equipment. The new fitness room is the ultimate space for both corporate and leisure guests to unwind and workout.
The latest room to be completed is the hotel’s spa treatment room, built to provide guests with the ultimate space for beauty therapy. Guests can now enjoy a variety of treatments including massages, facials, manicures and pedicures with Stoke Place’s beauty specialists Flutterby.
Only 30 minutes away from the bustle of London, Stoke Place is a quiet haven away from the city. Set amidst the English country landscape, the three storey ‘William and Mary’ style house was originally a family home in 1690 until it was converted into a hotel. With an impressive 26 acres of grounds, Stoke Place provides a stunning backdrop for a relaxing and rejuvenating break. Stoke Place’s Garden Room restaurant has recently been awarded an excellent rating of ‘4’ in the Good Food Guide 2011, 2 AA Rosettes for outstanding cuisine in the AA Restaurant Guide and has been recommended within the Michelin Guide for Great Britain and Ireland 2011.

Great Hotels of the World reports increase in meeting and incentive enquiries
Great Hotels of the World (http://www.ghotw.com), the London based global hotel sales and marketing alliance has reported an 89% year-on-year increase in meeting and incentive enquiries through its MICE desk in June 2011. It has also reported a year-on-year increase in enquiries of 31% from the period January – June 2011. These positive trends signal a healthy growth in the meeting and incentive market and are predicted to continue throughout the rest of the year and into 2012
Armand Guillemot, Director of MICE sales at Great Hotels of the World comments: “Enquiries for meeting and incentive bookings have been increasing steadily since October 2010 and have risen dramatically in the first half of 2011, signalling a healthy growth in the MICE market. Our enquiries are from a mix of agency and direct corporate buyers, mainly from France, UK, Ireland and Germany. The most requested destinations for meetings and incentives are Spain and the UK but we do also get demand for other emerging destinations such as Seoul, Montenegro and India.”
Great Hotels of the World has also reported a number of other MICE trends. Lead times for enquiries are shorter with an average lead time of six weeks for enquiries in June 2011. Many companies are wary of booking too far in advance in the event of cancellation or postponement which in some cases is associated with hefty fees whereas some are simply taking advantage of favourable last minute rates and packages. The value of enquiries has increased as companies start to invest again in meetings and incentives. However at the same time, the destinations requested are usually closer to home.
Guillemot continues: “Businesses nowadays are much more return-on-investment focused. Budgets are cautiously growing but price is still a big deciding factor. Above all buyers are looking for flexibility and added value whilst remaining cost-effective.”
Great Hotels of the World offers a free venue finding service. For more information on this service, their collection of meeting and incentive hotels or to become an alliance member email mis@ghotw.com or call +44 (0) 20 7380 8557.

Ten things you should be doing on your website but probably aren’t
No matter what type of business you’re in, a well designed, fully optimised website is a must and for hoteliers it has never been more important. It is effectively a “shop window” to the public through which the hoteliers can attract more business. If you’re not using it to its full potential, you are effectively closing the door to sales. evolution (http://www.evolutiondistribution.com), the hospitality e-commerce and e-distribution provider, has compiled the top ten things hoteliers should be doing on their hotel websites but probably aren’t.
1. Add social media share buttons
Adding social share buttons such as facebook like and buttons and twitter share buttons to your website is a quick and effective way of boosting traffic to your site. Focus on offers, interesting articles and promotions and make sure the buttons look neat and tidy. Be careful not to clutter up pages with too many buttons. By a few people clicking these buttons, your message can potentially reach thousands of people.
2. Monitor your site loading time
Optimising your website loading time is essential for keeping your visitors on your site and not your competitors’. Ensure your page loading time is no longer than four seconds. Internet users are impatient and if your site is slow they will go elsewhere. Don’t have unnecessary background music, flash, embedded elements or large unoptimized images. All will increase your load time which will turn potential customers away.
3. Booking engine
Every hotel website should have a booking engine. If you don’t have one you will lose guests to your competitors. Install a booking engine that seamlessly integrates into the look and feel of your site. Make sure that it is user friendly and is able to sell ancillaries to the customer such as dinners, spa treatments or arrival gifts then sit back and watch your bookings grow!
4. Remove broken links
A website with broken links looks unprofessional. When most people come across a broken link, they will leave the website. Broken links also have negative effects on search engine rankings so check your website regularly to ensure there are none. It’s inevitable some busy hoteliers will miss one or two so get creative with your error messages. Avoid “coming soon” pages where possible; if this is unavoidable, at least includea date when the information will be available and redirect the user to another useful page.
5. Have a clear brand image
Let potential guests know who you are and don’t overcomplicate things. If you’re not clear about who you are, your guests will be the same and will swiftly leave your site. Include a prominent hotel logo in the top left of the site at all times and always link it to the homepage. Include a descriptive tagline that clearly states what your hotel is about and don’t use marketing jargon.
6. Improve your landing pages
Improving your landing pages is one of the easiest ways to improve your conversion rate. Once you’ve got the potential customer to your site, your landing page needs to convince them to stay on your site and ultimately to make a booking. Think about the user and what sort of information they expect to find out from the page. Remove anything that’s not needed and keep it simple and focused.
7. Analyse site statistics
Without analysing your site statistics, it’s impossible to improve your website. Familiarise yourself with the terms used to describe website traffic including – visits, hits, page impressions, unique views, etc. You’ll be able to find out which pages are the most successful, what times of the day are busiest for you, which search engines people use to reach you and lots more. Track and analyse these statistics and you’ll know how successful your website is and what you need to do to improve.
8. Keep it above the fold!
Web users spend 80% of their time above the fold – the upper half of the webpage before a user has to scroll down. Whilst some web users do scroll down below the fold, the space above it grabs the most of their attention, so make the most of it! Include prominent calls-to-action in this space as well as an appealing photo.
9. Be consistent
Make sure your website is consistent, clean and uniform in every way – it’s reflecting your hotel after all. The tone of voice in the copy, the colours, font style and size, the style and the type of images should all be consistent. Avoid bold, highlighted and underlined text as well as excessive use of capitals and exclamation marks. Be consistent with your site navigation, users don’t like learning how to use an unfamiliar site and do the same with the layout of the pages.
10. Use Google maps
Use Google maps to identify the location of your hotel. Show places of interest, good restaurants, bars and tourist attractions on the map to show the proximity to the hotel and highlight its convenient location. The rise in popularity of geo-tagging applications such as foursquare and facebook places also means that you can offer incentives for “check-ins” to your hotel.

Great Hotels of the World sees surge in corporate bookings
Great Hotels of the World (http://www.ghotw.com), the London-based hotel sales and marketing alliance has reported a 19% increase in corporate travel bookings via their GDS chain code (GW) in Q1 2011 in comparison with the same period in 2010, offering signs of growth in the corporate travel market.
John Clarke, director of sales and marketing at Great Hotels says, “Volumes have increased in key corporate cities such as Paris, Barcelona, Lisbon and Moscow which account for most of the growth we’ve seen. The value of each transaction has also seen an upturn to pre-recession levels. This trend indicates the beginnings of a return to pre-recession levels for the corporate travel sector as well as the economy, with more companies investing in corporate travel. However there is always caution in the marketplace and our focus is to at least maintain current levels, if not top them.”
Great Hotels has also noted additional improvements and trends to show that the business travel sector is pushing forward in 2011. The average transaction value of bookings made via Great Hotels’ GW chain code has increased by 23% in 2011 in comparison to 2010, as well as the average length of stay increasing to 3.7 nights. This positive growth is expected to continue throughout beyond 2011.
Good customer service is being rated more highly with greater emphasis being placed on a real understanding of guest preferences. Travel buyers will aim to include more amenities and flexible terms in their negotiations and hoteliers need to be aware of this. Free access to the internet is the number-one rated amenity by travel buyers and most expect it to be included in the rate, along with breakfast, parking and access to a business centre.
John Clarke adds: “The successful RFP process for 2012 is just around the corner and hoteliers should expect to enter the next round of negotiations with an upper hand in pricing as ADR returns to pre-recession levels. As business travel makes a come-back, hoteliers are in a much better negotiating position than they were this time a couple of years ago. Dynamic pricing models are a great way to negotiate corporate rates as hoteliers can ensure they are not selling their corporate rate at an unacceptably low level. Hoteliers need to find a balance between the rate they charge and the amenities included in that rate.”
Great Hotels of the World is exhibiting at this years’ Business Travel Market in London 22-23 June, stand number 212.
